Service Area: Pete owns the Eastern Cleveland location that is about an hour north of his home in Massillon. He also splits central Cleveland with another franchisee who owns the territory in Western Cleveland. He owns a second territory in Central Cleveland but will get that up and running once he develops his current market further.

Pete grew up in Canton, Ohio, where he gained a lot of his background knowledge on entrepreneurship. His first business venture was with a partner running a flooring company where they installed a variety of floor types. After 23 years in the flooring industry, he was ready to go into business on his own and wanted to be a part of developing something unique in a niche market. Dental Fix Rx’s flexible business model and single operator format attracted him to opening up his own service van. The business opportunity was a breath of fresh air for Pete and he has already accomplished tremendous growth. Pete’s goal is to expand and have another van or two up and running in the future. Once he has that established, he would like to switch into more of a sales/management role.

  • Q: What were the most unexpected challenges of opening your franchise?

It was establishing a name for myself and introducing the services to the dentists in the community. It wasn’t that there was a lot of competition but there was a different service provider that had been in the market much longer than I had. Being the new guy in town, I was starting from scratch and working toward breaking down those barriers. Once I was able to convince the dentist to try a different company and experience for themselves how my service offerings and customer service is different, that’s when the relationships started to build.

  • Q: Where did you get most of your advice/do most of your research? Any training resources from corporate that you found to be extremely useful? I was in a unique position because I was in the flooring industry and I did quite a lot of work for dentists in the community. Once I did a lot of online outreach, I was able to talk to each of them and express my interest in bringing this type of business to the area. They all told me that they thought it sounded like the perfect opportunity for the market and that they would consider using it once I gotten started. Connecting with my hometown dentists really opened my eyes to the opportunity and need for a type of service in the community.

 

  • Q: What advice do you have for individuals who want to own their own franchise? I would say work hard and don’t get discouraged. It’s a numbers game—the more people you see, the higher the chances you have of making a new connection. Whether being there at the right time or hearing how you can help them in the future, you increase the likelihood of a yes. Your exquisite customer service is the best way to have dentists remember you and will have them consistently choosing you as their go-to solution. It’s also important to put money aside as cushion while you get up and running. This will give you an excellent opportunity to succeed.

 

  • How has the dental fix franchise changed your life for the better? Compared to my previous career, my hours are much better. Everyone that has worked retail, knows that the hours are insane, weekends and evenings. My home life and stress levels have greatly improved. Of course there are some of those long days but nothing compared to retail.

Fai graduated from Wright State University in 2007 and for seven years he was working as a mechanical engineer. He also spent eight years designing Pump Motor and Air Compressors. Leung always wanted to own his own business and when he saw that the dental industry was being under serviced, he knew Dental Fix Rx would be the solution. 

He took the leap into entrepreneurship because he wanted to help people and knew his mechanical background would ensure dental office remain operational. He was also attracted to the single operator business model, low overhead and support from corporate. Fai knew he had limited experience working on his own but being in his 30’s he figured if he didn’t take a chance than, he would never have known what his skill set and entrepreneurial spirit was capable of. At Dental Fix Rx’s annual conference, he received the company’s 2016 Rookie of the Year award. 

Fai and his family reside in Montgomery County and being a father of one—he often gives back to the community by being a Passenger Safety Technician. He enjoys educating the community about proper use of car seat and seat belts.

• Q: What were the most unexpected challenges of opening your franchise?

Starting off there was the challenge of the unknown, I never knew what type of equipment or service calls I would encounter. I took it one day at a time and really focused my attention on providing excellent customer service because I knew that I was now in the business of selling myself. I experienced firsthand that there was a need for the business but I wanted to make sure dentist preferred working with me and in turn would recommend me to their network of peers. 

• Q: What advice do you have for individuals looking to purchase a Dental Fix Rx? 

It’s vital to be a people person and ask the right questions.If a dentist calls you for one thing, ask him or her if there is anything else you can do for them while you’re there. Nobody wants to be sold to, they want to be helped. To be successful it’s important to listen to their needs and just genuinely be there for them. I have some dentists that just text me because they know I’m responsive and reliable with my fast and cost effective on-site repairs. 

• Q: How do you differentiate yourself as a business owner
I’ve always been big on trust, integrity and peace of mind. I want to make sure the dentist and the dental practices feel comfortable with me and trusts that I am the fair, convenient and fastest repair option for their needs. As a business owner you have to respect that these dentist are entrusting you with their time and money. By living out my philosophy and being the solution, I’m able to provide peace of mind to my dentist.

Dental Fix Awards 4th Franchise in the State of Michigan
