TAKING CHARGE | Biomedical Engineer-Turned Entrepreneur Finds Fulfillment in Being Own Boss

Name: Jonathan Espinoza

Dental Fix Rx Franchisee Since: September 2016

Service Area: Northern New Jersey

Jonathan Espinoza worked as a biomedical engineer for 17 years before deciding to pursue business ownership. He spent five of those years working as a project manager for a private company he built from the ground up, and many other years within the biomedical engineering department of a New York City hospital. After tiring of the politics that went along with his previous experiences, Jonathan decided to pursue entrepreneurship. He wanted to do something for himself and be his own boss, so he looked into different franchise opportunities. After doing his due diligence, Jonathan decided to launch his own Dental Fix Rx business.

QUESTION & ANSWER

DFX: What were you doing professionally before joining Dental Fix Rx? What was your typical workday like?

Jonathan: Before Dental Fix Rx, I worked as a biomedical engineer and after that as a manager of biomedical technicians for a private company I helped build. Every day was different, but most days – especially toward the beginning of my career – were spent servicing medical equipment. I became proficient with most everything that was in hospitals, and I enjoyed the hands-on work. My managerial positions were more about managing my team, which grew to about nine technicians, and keeping everything running smoothly and efficiently.

DFX: What skills from your previous career came in handy as a Dental Fix Rx franchisee?

Jonathan: My experience working with and servicing medical equipment obviously came in handy as a Dental Fix Rx owner/operator, although I hadn’t worked extensively with dental equipment repairs. Dental Fix Rx has great training and support for repairs, especially with their initial three-week hands-on training for franchisees. I learned a lot from that experience, and I appreciate always having their support if I come across a repair that is particularly difficult or that I haven’t dealt with before.

DFX: What have you been able to enjoy more now that you’re a franchise owner with Dental Fix Rx?

Jonathan: I really enjoy the autonomy and flexible schedule I have being a business owner. I also really like the mobile aspect of Dental Fix. Not only does it allow for low overhead costs, but it also just makes the workday go by much faster. I didn’t want to be stuck in an office all day, and I enjoy that with Dental Fix Rx. I can travel around, and my environment is constantly changing. No two days are the same – that’s one of the things I enjoy most about owning a Dental Fix Rx franchise.

TAKING CHARGE | Michael Ryan Puts Previous Experience to Good Use with Dental Fix Rx Franchise

Name: Michael Ryan

Dental Fix Rx Franchisee Since: October 2014

Service Area: Fort Worth, TX

Michael Ryan worked for a mining and recycling company, handling various accounts and responding to customer complaints. The job required him to work long hours and weekends. Yet, he planned to stay at the company and grow into new positions. But, when it became clear Michael would not be promoted, he knew it was time for a change. He discovered Dental Fix Rx, which aligned well with his customer service experience. Now three years after launching his franchise, he has had more time for his family and uses the flexible hours to spend time with his kids.

QUESTION & ANSWER

DFX: What were you doing professionally before joining Dental Fix Rx? What was your typical workday like?

Michael: I worked with a mining and recycling company. We made and sold products like mulch and compostable goods. I had a desk job, and in a regular day I worked with customer service and managed employees. Overall, I was working over 70 hours a week, often coming in on weekends. It was too much. Now I have control over my schedule and my goals and growth. I love being able to eat dinner with my family every night and take my kids to school in the morning. It’s those moments I was missing out on that Dental Fix has allowed me to be a part of again.

DFX: What skills were you most surprised would come in handy as a Dental Fix franchisee?
Michael: I worked in customer service before, which I enjoyed. It has really been helpful with Dental Fix for sales and marketing efforts. That can often be a challenging part of the business, but is so important for building your client network. So it’s great that I had not only done similar things before, but I genuinely enjoy working with people. It has been a great fit for me.

DFX: If you could go back to day one as a Dental Fix franchisee, what advice would you give yourself?

Michael: Since you’re the only employee it takes a lot of internal motivation to launch a business like this. Ultimately you are the one who has the power to make your business successful. So I’d remind myself to generate your own energy, stay motivated and be patient. Nothing happens overnight, but with hard work and perseverance you’ll get there.

Help from Support Network Leads to Franchisee Becoming Dentist’s Go-To Repair Specialist

Name: Fai Leung

Launched His Dental Fix Rx Franchise: February 2016

Service Area: Dayton, Ohio

Before becoming a Dental Fix Rx franchise owner, Fai worked as a mechanical engineer, designing pump motors and air compressors. However, he had a strong entrepreneurial spirit and was on the lookout for a franchise concept that would be a good fit for him. Fai noticed equipment repair in the dental industry was lacking and saw Dental Fix Rx answering the demand. Confident his mechanical engineering background would ensure dental offices remain operational, he became a Dental Fix Rx franchisee in 2016. He was also attracted to the single operator business model, low overhead and support from corporate. In 2016, Fai was named Rookie of the Year by Dental Fix Rx and Franchise Owner of the Year in 2017.

QUESTION & ANSWER:

DFX: Describe your most memorable repair experience.

Fai: I had a dentist who had constant issues with his water unit and lines. The water would just stop coming out. He tried getting it resolved with a competitor, but the issue kept recurring every three months or so. I took on the job, and while a lot of people would say, “Well, I tried, but I couldn’t fix it,” I never gave up.

DFX: What did you do first?

Fai: There were times I woke up in the middle of the night thinking, “I don’t know what to do,” because I tried everything I could think of. The whole unit was brand new. Every part was removed and replaced. It made no sense to buy another unit because it was brand new anyway. But, I still had to figure out the problem. We can’t look at our watches and say, “Well, time’s up, I have to go home.” We don’t go home until we have fixed the problem. If I don’t make that repair, I don’t get paid. Dental offices appreciate those who go above and beyond for them. They have to take care of their patients, so we have to take care of them. That relationship works very well.

DFX: How did you resolve the problem?

Fai: Because Dental Fix Rx is such a tight network, I was able to talk with my regional trainer, who gave me a couple of ideas to try out. Thanks to that support, I was able to fix the problem, and I became the dentist’s go-to repair business. I ended up using a component that wasn’t meant for the unit. It worked, and I was thrilled.

DFX: What was the key takeaway from this experience?

Fai: What I learned is you have to ask questions. You can do everything the manufacturer says, but the world isn’t perfect and sometimes that doesn’t work. So, you have to talk to your peers and ask the right questions. They may have experienced the same problem before and have the answer you are looking for.
